Student Highlight: Cameron Menzies

In the heart of North Texas, there’s a 16-year-old whose fingers effortlessly dance across the strings of his guitar, weaving melodies that speak volumes beyond his years. Meet Cameron Menzies, a young musician with a passion for classical guitar that’s as infectious as it is inspiring.

Cameron’s musical journey began at the age of 4, but it truly ignited when he turned 10 and received a purple electric bass guitar as a birthday present. He honed his skills throughout middle school, mastering the bass before transitioning to the electric guitar. His talent shone brightly as he performed with different bands in iconic North Texas venues, from the vibrant Deep Ellum music scene in Dallas to solo performances at venues like the Angelika Film Stage.

However, it was his discovery of classical guitar that truly set Cameron’s musical journey in motion. When he first encountered the depth of classical music, he was instantly hooked by its beauty and complexity. With the guidance of acclaimed classical guitarist Kasey Carmody, Cameron delved into the works of Bach and the fiery passion of Flamenco, drawing inspiration from his Cuban heritage.

Cameron has always been homeschooled, and his unique education has granted him the freedom to pursue his passions and excel as a motivated learner. Remarkably, he is on track to graduate with his Associate of Arts degree with honors from Dallas College—a testament to his dedication and academic achievements. Cameron is also an active member of the Dallas College jazz ensemble and jazz combo, where he has grown as a musician through collaboration with fellow musicians. In addition to playing beautiful music, Cameron enjoys writing poetry and composing music in his spare time. “Writing music and playing the guitar isn’t just about hitting the right notes—it’s about telling a story, expressing emotions, and connecting with others.”

Showcasing his creativity and versatility at every opportunity, Cameron is not merely an accomplished musician; he has also excelled as a stage actor in musical theater at the North Texas Performing Arts Academy, having performed on stage in 14 productions and counting.

As he prepares to graduate high school with honors and pursue his dreams at a prestigious music program, his journey serves as a reminder that with passion and perseverance, anything is possible.

And as he looks towards the future, he’s excited to continue sharing his love for music with the world, one melody at a time.
